The making of Night Runner

Making Of / 08 February 2022

Hello everyone!

Last year I had the opportunity to collaborate with designers, programmers, and other artists to create a game for our major production at the Academy of Interactive Entertainment.

The first 2 weeks were dedicated to Planning and 3 weeks to production

Planning

During this stage, we had been put into our groups and we each had to individually come up with a game concept and a storyboard to present and show to the entire group.

My storyboard for Night Runner

Night Runner concept: It would be a side-scrolling runner, the player would be red riding running from the spirit wolf. The player must collect flowers along the way to maintain their sanity and avoid obstacles in the process till they reach the end of the forest.

As a group, we voted on which games we wanted to create after that we pitched 3 ideas to the instructors where they would pick which one seemed possible to make within the time limit and had enough work for everyone. Night Runner was picked and we went back into our groups and we decided on ideas to add to the game and what to remove.

Art Bible/ Style Guide

Here are some concepts I had for the wolf, we choose the spirit wolf cause it went with the concept better and it would be easier to create than the other concepts in the time limit.

For the environment, we choose dark blues and greens for the colour palette and decided on having trees with little to no leaves. We picked the white flowers design, we later changed the colour from white to purple to go with the colour palette.

Production

For production, I worked closely with the designers and programmers to make the background and  UI art for the game.

Background Art

For the background, I created 3 panels that would be able to create a counties background I then combines the 3 panels onto one large canvas.

3D Models/ Sculpt

I sculpted the clothes on red riding but due to the time limit we decided to just use the base model, I also used the mushrooms I created from a previous project which was used as a reference by another artist to create the final mushrooms.

Ui Art

I asked the designers what they would like the UI art to look like and one of them made me a reference of the idea they had for it.

Practicing Environment Art Concepts

Work In Progress / 01 February 2022

Last year for my course we were put into groups and tasked to make a game I got to do the background art backplates, which I really enjoyed doing. So I've decided I want to get better at making Environment art concepts.

So I've decided to make a mini blog of the pieces I create.

For this one, I followed along with one of Victor Staris tutorial videos https://www.youtube.com/c/VictorStaris. I changed it up a bit, I wanted it to be like a dragon had awoken after being summoned by these ancient ruins and was coming to investigate the ruins.

I've been wanting to paint a maned wolf for a while now I think they are so cool looking so I found this really fun.

A Knight trying to return to his kingdom.

Concepts I didn't Finish

A traveller realising the mountains he walks upon are alive.

A traveller meeting a sleeping dragon will it awaken?

This one was an exercise we did in class we had 30 mins to create an environment from a blockout image the theme was abandoned ancient Aztec.
